John Heard's best movie.
I of course grew up watching him in Home Alone. Probably the very first time I ever saw a dad in a movie. Probably even before Mike Brady, Andy Griffith, Carl Winslow, Ward Cleaver, Steve Douglas.
Then I saw him as the idiot vice president in My Fellow Americans. He was so annoying in that movie!
So it was really interesting to see him completely change from playing in lame and/or family films and show up in this. I never hold it against an actor for going a different direction. Like with Home Alone, I wasn't traumatized by seeing Joe Pesci and Tommy Lee Jones in JFK! Oh and John Candy has a part in that movie too. I view different characters as different people. Don't automatically associate that character with The Great Outdoors.
