Dangerous Minds or One Eight Seven?

Which one do you like better? I'd pick One Eight Seven. I just feel that it's a more powerful movie. It's just too bad I don't see it on TV as often as Dangerous Minds comes on (even if DM does come on every once in a while).

These movies arent even the same except that they're in L.A. about a new teacher in a ghetto class. This movie is definately the better of the two simply cause its more powerful and doesnt have the story book ending which makes it more realistic. The teacher never got thru anyone except Rita and used bad ways to deal with bad people.

reply

In no way are they the same. 187 is so much more of a powerful movie. Yes Dangerous Minds was alright, but 187 had more of a realistic approach to it. Dangerous minds was like a Cinderella story.

I liked this movie better. There was a real sense that everything was not just going to be alright.

"Dangerous Minds" seemed a bit implausible. I would have thought that Michelle Pffeifer as an ex-marine was a stretch but she really didn't know how to defend herself in unarmed combat and that was too much.

reply

Dangerous Minds is too hollywoodish while 187 is gritty. also, samuel l. jackson makes this much better than DM.

reply

Dangerous Minds is almost like a lighter version of 187

reply

I prefer this (187), but to correct an earlier poster, Dangerous Minds takes place in the San Francisco bay area, not la.

DANGEROUS MINDS TAKES PLACE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA NOT S.F. THE CITY AND NEIGHBORHOODS LOOKED NOTHING LIKE SAN FRAN AND I'VE SEEN A LOT OF THAT CITY IN REAL LIFE AND IT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE IT DID IN THIS MOVIE...BESIDES THE MOVIE WAS FILMED IN PASADENA AND PART OF SANTA CRUZ

reply

It takes place in East Palo Alto, California, which is in the SF Bay Area.

reply

according to the info yeah you are right somewhat about the location they filmed it in...SAN MATEO, CA...but the movie doesn't show that it takes place in the area...but a lot of people assume its southern california because of some of the 'cholos' seen in the film

reply

the only indication is one of the school buses in the beginning says East Palo Alto Union.

minds is better, and is actually realistic.

they both hot, but i'd have to go with with 187.

Both are good movies I think, but I've always preferred 187. Darker, bleaker, more pessimistic, this movie really got under my skin with its sheer, dramatic power. I still think it's one of Jackson's most effective performance, and the rest of the cast is just as effective (Clifton Collins Jr. is a true revelation as a ruthless gang member whom Jackson's teacher has the misfortune of having as a student). Dangerous Mind was a lighter, more optimistic movie, with a very good central performance by Michelle Pfeifer, and some nice acting from the actors playing the students, but I can't say I liked it as much as 187.

I agree with the other posters that vote for 187. I like that the movie implied that the some of the problems did not automatically have easy answers-at least the solutions sometimes thrown out.

reply

Pat answers, at least. Anyway, both of the movies were good but again, I like 187.

reply

Dangerous Minds seem like it was more of a rougher edged Disney movie.

187 was like something you would see in a risky Indie production or something on FX (like the Shield, Nip/Tuck, or Rescue Me). Just look at the cinematography, lighting, and the way the story is told.

If FX made a show about teachers, it would be similar to this movie, where the lines are blurred between good and bad or black and white, especially with protagonist and storyline which would have unique aspect to it.

Both movies r powerful. As a former teacher of 7 years I will say that for aspiring teacher; Dangerous Minds is great because it shows the impact a teacher can make in the lives of students, even though we all know one teacher can't reach everyone.

But 187 is a more accurate portrayal (sp?) Of the teaching field. No of course teachers aren't going around killing their students but look at the film and notice the lack of respect the teachers are credited. Also the attitude of other long term teachers as well as the administration not backing their teachers. And its worse with the policy the former US president Bush forced the government to implicate in schools around the country. This No Child Left Behind in theory was a great idea. But in reality it doesn't make sence at all. NCLB is putting all the blame on the teachers, where I do believe should be held accounable, if students aren't doing well. It leaves everything on the teachers shoulders and parents aren't accounded for anything. In the end it comes down to test scores because districs receive more money when certain schools gain high scores. But how many students actually take those tests seriously? And then teachers get the blame? And what about the students with special needs? The government doesn't even put them into consideration. When I taught my last year children with downsyndrome and autistic students were forced to take the tests. What is that about?

And all the paper work that central office makes teachers complete is rediculus. How are teachers suppose to teach when the job entails grading, planning, special projects, meeting with parents, keeping up with those lower leaners and then have the district drop mandatory reports on us that are very lengthy and time consuming.

I know 187 didn't go into that but like I stated it did show the attitudes of students, teachers and administration. It was more accurate in other words. I miss teaching every day. I taught grades 2-7 and every year was different. I don't miss th BS, but the true meaning of teaching I do.

Sorry if I went off and thanks for reading.

I liked both, but i prefer One Eight Seven, like ther people said, it´s a more powerful film...

Dangerous Minds.
I can forgive the film's cheesyness because I love the book so much. So, I'm a little biased. As the book is real accounts, I kinda feel it heart warming that there are good people in the world.

187 Has a real grittyness that I wished DM had.

187 was a much better, grittier film. Dangerous Minds was OK, but it dragged and seemed unrealistic even for a movie!
It didn't help that Michelle Pfieffer did not act well in that film, while Samuel L. Jackson was brilliant in 187.
You *forget* the message of DM, while 187 gets in your mind and is not easily forgotten.

I'm in the minority here, but I liked Dangerous Minds better, it's one of my favorites. Dangerous Minds had a better soundtrack and a more upbeat ending.
