There is no way he could have returned to classes after Garfield died. Aside from him being under suspicion of involvement since his friend Caesars body was found in Garfields house too, wasn't the principal completely against a lawsuit or scandal? Pretty sure this would qualify.

There was no proof that Stevie was ever in Garfield's house or involved in his death.
He may have been suspected, but no proof was apparently found.
