One simple question:

If Garfield got stabbed in the beginning, what was he thinking going to a similar type of school in LA?

I know it negates the whole movie, but I just wonder if that happened to you, youd have to have some stones to return to that environment again.

kmay144,
Just watched it on Starz/Encore. I wondered the same thing. Don't think I would trade NY for LA and expect it to get better, or even different. I ended up in nursing, but since childhood I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to teach in a place where the kids actually wanted to be educated, to learn, to do something special with their life. Guess that is why God sent me to nursing instead of letting me be a teacher.

I have a lot of respect for the teachers that try to make a difference in the rough schools. Don't think I could do it.

Take a chance, flip a coin, everything is 50/50

I wondered that too. Why in the world would he step into a ghetto school after what happened to him??
Why not try for a job at a private school?!!!

The only answers I could think of would be: 1. He couldn't get a job in a private school. Maybe because of stigma attached to what happened, even though it was not his fault. Schools are more political than the White House.
2. He thought he could make a difference with the kids that 'wanted to learn'.

But it just seemed like one hell of a long move (from New York to California) just to end up at the same type of place.

"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

He says at the end to cesar 'no matter how many of you I get rid of I can't get my life back' that to me made it sound like he was travelling the country to ghetto's helping the kids he could and killing the kids who are beyond help like benny.

He basically said the day that kid stabbed him he died he lost everything he was.
