The romance was pointless and boring
I usually fast forward or mute that part. This is just one of many movies in Hollywood that have the lead girl forced into the plot but it could have been just as strong without her
shareI didn't really think it was pointless. Garfield wanted to have a normal social life but he was so screwed up from being attacked in NYC and then dealing with the gang in LA that he just was just incapable of having an intimate relationship. But he at least tried. Plus they needed to show at least one other decent person in the film and the female teacher was the only one really trying to reach out to him.
shareI was kinda hoping she'd get attacked or something and he'd come to her rescue, so she could see his point.
