better then i thought but obviously not as good as the original

I am a huge King fan and of course Kubrick is the greatest director of all time. We all know that. And I think the 80 versions Is the perfect blending of the two. Kubrick movies are great but they can be a bit remote and cold. Think Full Metal Jacket. That’s where Kings book really helped cause King has always been good at showing families and friendships. Human Connections thing like that. And as for Kubrick he not only captured th eerie tone and creepy feel of the book in his movie but he was also able trim a lot of the fat off the story. So yeah I love the Kubrick movie. Not because it came first but because to me it is a great film. A truly scary film. So I didn't have much hope for this.e. Plus I saw the nostalgia critic review before I saw the miniseries and I doubt that helped.

But it was better than I thought it would be. In this version ur really get the sense of how Jack is suffering , that there is some good still him and how conflicted he is about everything. I love the scene where Weber talks about how he broke the kids arm while crying. It’s really sad. And the final confrontation between Weber and the kid where Weber is fighting back is just tragic. Plus there is lot more of a family connection. It seems like they could really have been a happy family. Weber and Demorny had a lot of chemistry to. So many scenes where it seem like she is gonna figure it out but Weber would always convince her to stay. I wanted to Scream he is just telling u what u want to hear. Also I had an angry alcoholic father and a lot of the scenes of Weber and the kid where he is flipping out and Demorny is trying to calm him, they hit close to home. And there were a lot of creepy little touches. I loved when all the chairs fell off the table. Simple but effective. And I did read the book so I always wanted to see the hedge animal scene and I think it was done really well . Like when Weber pops his head up and the lions are like a foot away. Real creepy. But let’s be fair this film is not as good as Kubrick’s or even close. The Hotel in Kubrick’s is much better. Much colder and just….so desolate. Weber does a good job showing the tormented side of Jack but at no point is he scary. Nicholson he was terrifying. When u watched Nicholson u think ‘wow I’m glad I’m not stuck somewhere with that pyscho’….. when u watch Weber u think ‘The guy from Wings, how intimidating can he be’ the croquet mallet didn’t help. The ax was better. And all that talk of medicine and pups is just…..silly. Yeah I know its in the book. Still……And its was waaaaay to long. I could see two episodes but three no they should have trimmed it down more. And the kid who played Danny. No good. Danny Loyd from the first one wasn’t exactly Oscar worthy but there was something real spooky about the kid. But Courtland Mead, just no… And Melvin, he was no Scatman. Granted Rebecca De Morney is lot better looking than Shelly Duval. Stilll I think that was kind of the idea. I mean if you were stuck in a place for months with no other woman but Duval wouldn’t u go insane. Now I know King didn’t like the Kubrick version but what does he know. I remember in my script writing class they tell you whenever you have to hand over a script be it in class or to actual movie people u can’t go Into it with the idea that the script is perfect and can’t be improved in any way. Same goes with situations like this. Granted Kurbcik and co made a lot of changes but so what. Jurassic park, Jaws, The Godfather were all changed from book to movie. Most of the changes were for the better. Plus I think king was more annoyed about the changes because of his personal connection with the book like his own battle with alcoholism then anything else. Stilll all that aside thought its not as good as the Kubrick version it’s still good. And it is interesting seeing a story told in a different way.
