I think, though, that Kelley tried to develop a deeper relationship with them since, originally, it had been just him and her when the law firm started. Eugene, Eleanor and Lindsay came later.

Alan would do one of 2 things to Helen:
1 - he would have completely washed away her legal ethics with all the antics he pulled.
or
2- he would have been arrested and prosecuted by Helen. Of course he'd win, she'd never forgive herself and she would eventually go insane.
