ive never really watched this show much but boston legal is one of my alltime fave shows but ive never bothered with this show. i really only wanna watch s8 of the practice to check out shores beginnings... should i bother? im taking it the majority dont like s8? so critical reception aside, as a boston legal fan should i check out s8? or hell should i check out the whole show? edit: im checking out posts on here and people call it a prequel to boston legal which is sorta what im hoping it is
The main difference between the two shows is that, while Boston Legal has a nice mix of drama and comedy, The Practice focuses on drama. TP is occasionally very funny, but generally the tone is more serious and gritty. In TP, Alan Shore joins a small firm of criminal defence lawyers, in contrast to the rich business firms - like in BL - where he is more at home. Despite these differences, the characters are remarkably consistent across the two shows, so when Denny Crane first showed up, he was already as wacky as he was in BL.
The Practice is a 10/10 show for me - it's consistently riveting. I don't think there was a drop in quality in S8. Perhaps some fans were annoyed by the big changes in the cast; basically Alan Shore took over as the main character in S8.
Some trivia about guest stars in S8. The first episode features Viola Davis, long before she became famous. Sharon Stone played a friend of Alan Shore in a few episodes - she actually won an Emmy award for this role.
Yeah, you could just watch Season 8 of The Practice, but you'd be missing out on seven seasons of excellence from the same man that created and wrote Boston Legal--David E. Kelley.
Season 8 does kind of stand on it's own, but it's not as good (IMO) as the first three seasons. Some of the later seasons did kind of stretch things a bit too much, but the first two or three seasons of The Practice are among the best in television history (IMO). Better than any season of Boston Legal.
Do yourself a favor, watch the first episode and see if you can stop.
Or, if you like comedy, try Ally McBeal. Another David E. Kelley show. He actually wrote it while also writing The Practice (and had a couple crossover episodes). He also won Emmys for Best Comedy (Ally) and Best Drama (Practice) in the same year, 1999. He's the only one to ever do that as far as I know.
The Practice (TP) is my all-time favourite TV show, apart from Friends. It was about a law firm run like a dysfunctional family. They bickered and fought but closed ranks when needed. Must watch all eight episodes, Ep.8 was a prequel to Boston Legal (BL) and James Spader was great, so was Sharon Stone. However, BL was not as riveting as TP.
Each character had interesting characteristics, strengths and flaws but the person to hate is Ellenor, who I call the sad puppy face, though equally love-to-hate is Eugene, the pouty lips which looked like they had too much collagen injected into them. He was a better lawyer than Ellenor but both were not rainmakers. They were both arrogant though Ellenor is the more insolent. Jimmy, who I called Magoo, is like the cartoon character to bring some fun into the party.
The ugly face of Ellenor is seen in S3, Ep15, "Lawyers, Reporters and Cockroaches" when she railed about Lindsey earning twice more than her and was very bitchy. It was unjustified railings as the pay structure was performance based. She was just a jealous bitch, needing to be laid. Bobby should have got rid of her but he being a nice guy, lacked the ruthlessness to be a good captain of a business entity.
If there is DVD of all 8 seasons, I would like to buy it for my collections, together with Friends.
Wow, you really judge people a lot on looks. I personally liked all the characters, with the possible exception of Alan. Yeah, he was funny and entertaining, but he could be a real jerk, too.
Ha, I'm wanting to watch season 8 only too. I love it that Practice fans hate season 8, it must mean it's just like BL. I've seen some episodes from earlier seasons and I understand it is good, but I don't like the characters. I think BL is great fun, so I'm looking forward to this prequel season.

As Boston legal fan you should ONLY watch season 8. Seasons 1-7 might be not very enjoyable for you. No offense, season 8 is just pure entertainment, in my opinion, especially in contrast with some real drama in previous seasons.
Thanks for asking that! Im want to know the same thing... I love boston legal but i really never like the practice buy i had curiosity to watch how all started.....
