They lack any kind of sympathetic character. Half the time, you're glad to see them die, and just feel sorry for whomever the killer ends up being!
It can start to piss you off to see the cops succeed at doing their job!

i tend to prefer it when the muder victims aren't too likeable, because if ai feel too sorry for them it makes it too sad to watch. And the murderers ideally are unlikeable too. midsomer Murders tends to have rather too many nutty murderers for my taste, i prefer it when they are sane but ruthless.

It's the same thing in most of the Agatha Christies I've read, too.
I don't mind it, myself. It opens the pool of suspects right up, and often the murderer winds up being just as bad as the victim, so you get a good dose of satisfaction with the arrest as well as with the murder!
Death of a Hollow Man features a pretty vile character killing another vile character. Then there was the episode where people were killed just because they were bellringers, because the killer thought it lift a family curse.
