New Book on the sinking
I might have mentioned this before, but in the book "Tall Ships Down"
its revealed that the boat sank mostly due to a combination of different owners making modifications over the years. Originally she had a heavy German engine, giving her more ballast, but that engine was replaced with a more modern and lighter engine. The boat originally had very little deck house, but another of the owners, had added a larger deck house forward, making her top heavy. The combination with a heavier topside and a lighter bottom meant that if conditions became right, she would flip and be unable to recover once she reached a breeching point much less than what she could have handles, had the changes not been made. Anyway, all of these were done before Shepherd got the boat. The USCG made school ships harder to exist.
