Did Anybody Else Not Like It?

As part of my Theater class, My theater teacher showed my class this film. We only watched the first half hour of it but by judging by that first half hour, I just didn't care for it. I have not seen any other of Christopher Guest's films even though I wanted to see This Is Spinal Tap, I am now hesitant. I am just asking did anybody else not care for it?

It gets funnier with each viewing so I would recommend watching it more than once or starting with Best in Show then watching it. I saw Spinal Tap years ago and didn't like it but I'll have to watch it again since I love all of the other films. Maybe it takes watching one or more of Guest's films that you love to get into the quirkiness of his characters.

Exactly right. All of Guest's "improv" movies seem to get better with repeated viewings. I saw "Guffman" years ago and was only mildly amused. I saw it again last night and was doubled over at certain points. Same was true for "Best in Show" and "This is Spinal Tap," which never gets old. I've only seen "For Your Consideration" and "A Mighty Wind" once.

The only caveat is that it helps to have to have a working knowledge of the subject matter being sent up and film in general to fully appreciate a lot of the jokes. In this one, there were a few movie in-jokes that, while not exactly subtle, few high-school students are going to really get. How many 16-year-olds have heard of "Remains of the Day"? That's not meant as a dig; it's just reality.
