I had the exact same thought.
I don't know what Guest is up to these days, and I suppose there's not enough of a commercial market to justify new DVD releases for "Guffman" and the other Guest films in this genre.
But I'm guessing that these Guest films have a devoted cult following who would appreciate "Director's Cut" versions of "Guffman" et al that incorporate much more of the material that was left on the cutting room floor to accommodate theatrical release.
I only got around to seeing "Spinal Tap" (on DVD) several months ago, and I was amazed that the DVD contained an extended "reel" of out-takes that almost amounted to a companion film; some of them were excessive or sub-par, but a lot of the scenes were as good as anything that was in the theatrical version.
In the DVD commentaries, Guest always talks about how they shoot hours and hours of material that must then be painstakingly edited and eliminated. But it's obvious from the deleted scenes that much of this is worthwhile and would be appreciated and enjoyed by dedicated fans.
It's ironic that in many cases, directors issue bloated and self-indulgent "Director's Cut" versions that are superfluous at best. Whereas here, I think that fans would love to see fuller versions of the theatrical releases that incorporate high-quality performances that round out the story and give it a deeper-- and funnier-- dimension.
I too think an intact and uncut "Red, White, and Blaine" performance would do it justice, and that it was a shame that it was cut down in the original. I hope my "dream" comes true and it will be released in some form eventually.
