'This BULGING RIVER. . .'

Gloriously funny.

Guest really *$)(#$( up when he left this number on the cutting room floor. Let's hope that in the future the film might be re-released with the scene restored, along with "Nothing Ever Happens In Blaine," which, when the Martian sings it, makes no sense.

I know! That was my favorite song from the entire show. I really would like to see Red White & Blaine show up as a complete show as a DVD extra (similar to what they did with the finale concert on the A Mighty Wind DVD).

Also you're totally right about the Martian reprise not making sense. Pretty frustrating to see it all cut out.

I had the exact same thought.

I don't know what Guest is up to these days, and I suppose there's not enough of a commercial market to justify new DVD releases for "Guffman" and the other Guest films in this genre.

But I'm guessing that these Guest films have a devoted cult following who would appreciate "Director's Cut" versions of "Guffman" et al that incorporate much more of the material that was left on the cutting room floor to accommodate theatrical release.

I only got around to seeing "Spinal Tap" (on DVD) several months ago, and I was amazed that the DVD contained an extended "reel" of out-takes that almost amounted to a companion film; some of them were excessive or sub-par, but a lot of the scenes were as good as anything that was in the theatrical version.

In the DVD commentaries, Guest always talks about how they shoot hours and hours of material that must then be painstakingly edited and eliminated. But it's obvious from the deleted scenes that much of this is worthwhile and would be appreciated and enjoyed by dedicated fans.

It's ironic that in many cases, directors issue bloated and self-indulgent "Director's Cut" versions that are superfluous at best. Whereas here, I think that fans would love to see fuller versions of the theatrical releases that incorporate high-quality performances that round out the story and give it a deeper-- and funnier-- dimension.

I too think an intact and uncut "Red, White, and Blaine" performance would do it justice, and that it was a shame that it was cut down in the original. I hope my "dream" comes true and it will be released in some form eventually.

All good points so far on this thread. I love "This Bulging River"; that and Libbie Mae's audition from the extra features, are pure genius. I understand why her audition did not make it (having nothing to do with its exceptional quality) but not sure why "TBR" did not.

I'm equally okay with either/or of the Nothing Ever Happens in songs.

In the DVD commentary Guest indicated that the writers were exceptionally proud of the song and really wanted to include it in the final cut. However, the song ran over ten minutes long and slowed the pace of the film far too much. There was just no wait to leave it in. It is a shame, because it was the funniest number in the show.

Thanks for the heads-up about this song I can't wait to check it out, great to know that there's still more stuff to enjoy from this movie. I found that I cannot get that "Stool" song out of my head and I laugh every time I think of it, the musical numbers in this movie rival those from This Is Spinal Tap, pure comedy.
