I think he means soccer. Some people say football and some say soccer. Both words are British, so stop being a snob.

I hear what you're saying but the funny thing about the word soccer and most "American English variations (including spellings)" is that they are actually old English words and spellings made up by the English. Soccer is an English word and not American.. I am not American, I am English and I recognise the fact that America though completely ridiculously, have their own sport called football. Of course the word football is incorrectly matched to their game gridiron, but they call it football and that ain't never gonna change.

Also, I currently live in America and I have to say that I hate when Americans try to correct me by saying "ohh you mean BAY-SULL or VYE-TAMINS" when I ask for basil or vitamins. Er no I mean basil and vitamins, we pronounce words differently and use different words. I'm English and I speak English. You're American and you speak English. Get over it.
But thanks for loving my accent lol and no I do not hang out with the Queen.

Second part was a rant lol

It's the colours of Hibs, who he supports, but isn't an actual Hibs shirt

Yes soccer is an old English word but we know not to use anymore as the word football is more suitable for the sport where you use your foot to kick a ball. The majority of the American language was invented by the English not only the word soccer.
Anyways to answer to original question, the scene with Renton in the bar, looker like he was just wearing a tracksuit jacket.

A lot of Australians call it soccer because of Australian Rules Football. But at least unlike Gridiron we mostly do kick the ball in that game.

In Australia we call it soccer. Football is what we call Rugby League, Rugby Union and our own aerial ping-pong (Aussie Rules - AFL).

The story is set in Leith which is home to Hibernian FC. They are the Catholic team of Edinburgh while Hearts are the protestant team. Irvine Welsh is a Hibs fan and quite frankly a bigot when it comes to the other side. You can tell in his books that he hates Hearts, Rangers and Britain in general. I think he lives in Ireland now.
