Diane's parents

Her parents are not upset that she has an older male guest stay overnight?

It's a fair enough question, but I guess they were open-minded and comfortable regarding her daughter's relationships (and probably were catholic, too). Some parents see sexual relationships as a healthy sign, socially and physically, and often contribute positively to their children's overall well-being; relationships are, afterall, a very important facet of life. I think this film was made prior to the explosion of sex registers and all that business, so Diane having a relationship with an older guy probably didn't seem too big of a deal, or controversial, etc, etc. Also, perhaps they were very trusting of other people, and merely viewed Mark as a friend.

What better example is there that morality overall ISN'T an absolute or a timeless, placeless truth.

I get the gist of what you are saying, but can you clarify or expand on this philosophical reasoning? Are you saying their -- Renton's and Diane's -- one-night stand was wrong, even in the circumstances in the film? Or are you saying that morality is entirely a matter of personal opinion and open to interpretation?

reply

Yeah I sort of think it is a matter of personal opinion and can be open to interpretation.

The reason she made Renton keep quiet while entering the house and then sleep on the couch was likely so that her parents wouldn't find out she was shagging him. I always assumed the parents were supposed to be oblivious to her behavior, and that they would have assumed he was just a platonic friend crashing on the couch for the night.

^^^^^^ This

It's obvious her parents have no idea they slept together so I have no idea what the other poster above was going on about her parents being open-minded about her sexual relationships.

That's how it happened in the book. She told them that he was a friend of a friend who got drunk the night before and locked himself out of his apt. She offered for him to spend the night on the couch. They pretty much believed it.

Yeah, plus when Mark gets talking to Dianne's dad, it turns out that they have some mutual acquaintances.
