Why Were They...

...so excited about 16,000 pounds? Split 4 ways, that's only four thousand each, and they had already PAID four to get the stuff. I know it's better than nothing, but they acted in the pub like it was "set up for life" money. It would've made more sense (for the film) if they got something closer to retail price, which could be $100,000 per kilo or more. They could've gotten at least 16,000 pounds PER kilo. But then, movies aren't always logical.

No, I see that. And I'm fine with it, as what you say is no doubt true. But it just seems the reward didn't merit the risk. Renton's voiceover mentioned the potential for a long prison sentence many times. I guess it's a point that made a little more sense at the time of the movie's release. But with drugs being so much in the media since Trainspotting, we're all more aware of immense drug profits. I just figured a bigger return on the crew's investment would make more sense.

But it's a small point. Trainspotting is one of my favorite films, and I take no pleasure in criticizing it for what amounts to no big deal.

The guy who bought the gear off the boys skanked them, pure and simple. They're guys who don't expect much out of life, though.

Their happiness was more a combination of relief they were not killed nor arrested while making a tidy profit. £4,000 is likely the most these losers have ever owned. Also to get "retail price" they have go to the street to sell it. Not a promising endeavor.

Well, yes, of course you're right. I just would've liked to have seen Renton and Spud make out better. I can only imagine what the sequel will be like. I haven't read any of Irvine Welsh's writing where he revisits the characters, so I have no idea.

It was a great read. Here's what the character are up to ten years later (from wikipedia):

Simon David "Sick Boy" Williamson - Marred by a string of failed business ventures, decides to make a porn film. A heavy cocaine user. Still bitter about being ripped off by Renton in the previous novel. In the years since Trainspotting he had a son with a woman who is now his ex-wife. He has also lost some of the charm and physical attractiveness he previously possessed.

Mark "Rents" Renton - Kicked heroin and owns a successful nightclub in Amsterdam. Agrees to finance Sick Boy's porn film in exchange for a share of the profits, despite a mutual lack of trust and amiability. Has got into shape and learned martial arts in anticipation and fear of an eventual meeting with Begbie.

Danny "Spud" Murphy - After receiving his share of the drug money he has been regularly attending group sessions in an attempt to kick his drug habit. Is in a strained relationship with Alison (a character who was in an on / off relationship with Sick Boy in Trainspotting) and feels like he has become a burden on her. He considers his life insurance policy and contemplates suicide.

Francis "Franco" Begbie – A violent sociopath who seeks his former friends after being recently released from prison.

Oh, Mark gets back with Dianne, who's now nice and legal.

Just an update. Mr. Begbie violated conditions of his parole after arrested for biting off the nose of an Englishman in a Bridgeton pub. Currently back in prison and for whatever reason was made a cellmate of the famous prisoner Michael Peterson. Authorities report Mr. Begbie is much better behaved.

That's a lot of money to young people.

Ha-ha! Another fine point. Not to mention, if I were just out-of-the-blue given five grand in a lump sum, I'd gleefully dance around like that as well.

Yeah getting 4 gs for doing virtually nothing is nice. Plus, 4 gs went a little further in the 90s than it does now.

reply

Plus, they were poor, so that was probably more money than they've ever seen or had at one time.

reply

I think we might consider them as living in their own world. They are all misfits in their own ways maybe not really in touch with reality. They had probably never saw that much money with their own eyes, in the pub, their were desillusioned. They drink, they are affected and they fantasise.

reply

It's a lot of money to them. They've never had steady jobs (except for Renton and maybe Begbie), just lived on benefits and scams, so £4k in cash would seem like a lot of moolah to them.
