What did they do with the dead baby?

Who got rid of it and how? Does the book touch on this matter at all?

reply

I assume they would have rung the police/ambulance as what normally happens when someone dies. I don't think it's at all relevant to the story as it never comes up again. It isn't a major plot point, all it does is demonstrate the priority drugs have in their lives over everything else.

And how are they going to explain a several days dead baby? They most likely tossed it in the bin.

And social services and community nurses would just ignore that a baby existed?

reply

Social services would know of the baby. They would have to report it. We don't even know why the baby died, clearly neglect was the reason but you wouldn't necessarily be charged as it could be cot death, which just happens sometimes. As for the drugs, you would not have them or any in the house when the authorities came, der.

reply

They don't call the ambulance if not they would have found the drug den. They don't explain in the book, so I guess they end up burying Dawn.

reply

I'd also have to guess they disposed of the body, or they would've all be arrested for drug possession and at the very least the mother would've been brought up on charges of negligence.

reply

It was a crack den. I doubt they would have rung the police or an ambulance to report the baby's death. They probably buried it somewhere.

I've always wondered that too! The idea that she just buried her baby somewhere random by herself is heart-breaking but makes a lot of sense. The drugs were all important to them, no way would they have called an ambulance and risk being arrested. I've never got that scene. If you're a heroin addict, you're a heroin addict.

Everyone knows how addictive it is, so I wont be all moral about Alison. Its her life, she can do what she wants with it. I personally believe drugs should be legalised. I think it would be better for everyone and solve a lot of the problems involved with drugs, like overdoses, crime, AIDS, ETC. But why, in the name of God, did she bring her baby with her to a drug den? Why not leave Dawn with a babysitter, a friend, a family member, SOMEONE!! What did she think would happen?!

I've also always wondered whether or not Alison was ever charged with child neglect. Even if she did bury Dawn in the back garden, surely someone would notice she was missing and investigate? I don't know how it works in Scotland, but in Ireland, new born babies must, by law I think, be given regular check ups by the mothers GP.

I doubt a drug addict would have any qualms about breaking that last law you mentioned.

Ok (a bit of a generalisation but ok) but in Ireland at least, it isn't a matter of choice. You HAVE to take a new born for monthly check ups at the doctor. If you don't, social services WILL come knocking and ask why not. So if the law was in the same in Scotland in 1996, people would have found out, fairly quickly that the baby was missing.

The baby died of cot death. They would have called the police.

God I don't want to think about it. Powerful scene but very horrific to witness. Seeing the poor thing left to rot in her own mess really destroyed me a bit.

Mother Superior would've cleaned the place up, got rid of all the drugs and rang the cops. I'm sure the dealer has dealt with this sort of thing before.

When the police arrive they all have a story about being passed out drunk and waking to find the baby.

If no evidence of drugs can be found the cops couldn't do anything other then charge the mother with neglect. The junkies would instantly claim the child wasn't theirs or their responsibility and would have no problem letting the mother take all the blame as long they don't get arrested.

They are junkies but not stupid, they would know you can't just bury a body.

Exactly . They at least know more than most of the posters above.

Why did the dead baby cross the road? Because it was stapled to the chicken!
