What does Tin Cup stand for?
We just watched the movie, did they mention what Tin Cup stands for? Does anyone remember?

shareNever mind! We hadn't finished watching it yet. They've just shown the scene that tells us what it stands for.
Evidently when he was the catcher on his college baseball team, the pitcher on an opposing team was famous for curve balls that didn't hit his mitt. I guess he used a "Tin Cup" and the nickname stuck. Doreen said it was a better nickname than "Clank."
Forgive the paraphrase. :)

Couldn't pass up a deal at one of those large electronic stores,my whole family are golfers and well I am the black sheep of the family, can't get into the game itself but I swear Shelton makes this a great comedy as well as great nail biter at the end and the title refers to the hole-a tin cup
shareIt does NOT refer to the hole. It refers to his high school nickname, given because of his metal athletic supporter. And by the way, the holes are plastic. Maybe you should go golfing with your family and do some research before making ill-concluded assumptions.
shareWow -very hostile about one man's view as to why the film is titled the way it was. Lots of anger there, over a comedy.
Therapy perhaps, in your near future?
it was hostile, a bit, but he is right. the movie is very clear about why he is called 'tin cup'. they say it at the scene near the end...he was a catcher for the high school baseball team. their pitcher had a big league curve. all the pitches didnt always hiot his glove, and he used to wear a metal 'jock' to protect himself...
since the movie does state the reason, i can see why the guy would want to make it clear...although, yeah getting angry is a little extreme
There are some golf holes that are bottom lined with a metal grid in certain public courses so the water drains
But not 'tin' so yea, but the name still makes you think 'oh its golf related' when you see its a golf movie
LOL at these comments. Yeah, you guys are right on a couple of counts. But there's another secret meaning to what "Tin Cup" stands for that I'm about to share with you.
A tin cup is what Kevin Costner's character, Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy, is going to be holding when he's selling pencils on a street corner someday soon.
An improved ending for this movie would be Costner looking into the camera and saying the line, "Wanna buy a pencil?"
