I Hate The Ending!

It would have been a better movie if Roy would have landed it on the green and 2 putted for birdie to win the US Open.

Oh man the ending is the BEST PART!

He wins in the end because he gets the girl and also he beats his demons, winning the US Open would have regulated it to a DISNEY script. The way it turned out was worth more thought. Take a while and think why he took 12 shots to make the hole then re comment!

Agreed.

“Nice 'par', David.”

Awesome.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

He didn't beat his demons.

reply

Ah, but they'll remember his '12'.

The end was about 'defining the moment'. Earlier in the movie, we learn that when Tin Cup was at Q school, he shot a 13 on the final hole when a 12 would have earned him his tour card.

The writer may have written himself into a corner. I agree that the ending was bad -- it was a huge anticlimax, and the film ends with a whimper. It also carries a lame message of "it's better to be an idiot and stick with who you are than to learn from your mistakes and pull off the greatest accomplishment of your life."

However, having him win would have been too predictable and "Hollywood". It would have been a cliche.

The film needed to find a third option to have a truly great ending. I don't know what that third option is, but that's why I don't write movie scripts.

I totally agree. Roy was an immature baby. The movie celebrates immaturity. Instead of playing smart and laying up to have a chance to win the tournament, he has to conquer that hole, and he sacrifices the tournament to do so. Was he there to win the tournament or win one hole?

He won the battle but lost the war.

"Push the button, Max!"

With that in mind, do you agree with how Don Johnson played the final hole in the movie? By not even TRYING to go for it (and therefore having NO chance to win, etc.)? I'm seriously asking because I think this is an interesting thread/discussion...

People who think he should have laid up, are probably accountants, or just plain dull.

I remember the greats for not playing safe, Seve Ballesteros anyone?

Mitch, you wrote:

People who think he should have laid up know how to win. They understand the game of golf. Golf isn't about who can hit the ball the farthest. It's about playing the golf course so you take the least number of strokes.

Winning is not dull. Winning is exciting. I remember the winners for being winners. Like Jack Nicklaus.

Accountants are also winners. They've studied and learned a good profession, make a good living, and support their families. There's nothing dull about that.

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

Who's the big winner tonight? Mikey's the big winner, you know what, you're the big winner in more ways than one tonight.

i like the ending of the film. it is actually good.

One of the two must frustrating ends to a movie, but makes it great. 12 on the final hole of the US Open, and Mikey's phone multiple phone calls to his new number on Swingers.

For someone like Roy, winning while compromising their spirit and principles, however misguided they are, is not a victory.

People like that are willing to sacrifice everything for what they believe in. In real life that's a strategy for failure no matter what the self help books tell you. But once in a while it takes a man to greatness, and that's what the rest aspire to.

Put another way, if you try to live your dreams, most of the time you'll fail. But at least you tried.

Nice summary.

Plus, he almost made it, the gust from the gods cost him a chance at his goal...to finish 10 under par which not even nicklaus did in the open. Watch the movie again guys, he had a chance for greatness and he went for it. Only nature stopped him, not his own skill judgement. He didnt mis-hit it, he nutted it...

His frustration at the fates causes him to ignore common sense. Roy has character flaws, but he is too likeable and empassioned to consider a moron for acting how he does.

I love the ending, but personally everytime I see it I wish the gust of wind didn't happen. I want it to be like those books where you turn to page X and find out a different way things could pan out. A version where he makes it over, but maybe misses the eagle putt for 10 under. Thats the bitter sweet finish I sometimes want to witness.

Him winning but not getting the real goal he had his eyes on to be special in the history books (10 under par)
