Phil Mickelson's small part in movie

My favorite player Phil Mickelson
has been runner up 4 times in the U.S. Open.

Such a shame this great movie
didnt provide a speaking part for the current number 2 in the world.

I am unsure of his ranking back in 1996.
To watch the movie now 10 years later its still
Craig Stadler with all the lines. No magical wand to change that.
Does anyone share my feelings.

Billy Mayfair looks the same..weird a$$ hair and all

reply

I'm a Phil fan myself. Stadler's lines were great, especially during the Simms tourney. McCord was hilarious too "He's gonna hit it right off the *beep* Johny Miller is still his jackass self. His role fit him well.

reply

Apparently the Phil part was more than a cameo. Unbeknownst to Mickelson the Don Johnson character David Simms was actually loosely based on Phil Mickelson.

reply

I hardly recognized Mickelson, he was so thin.

Billy Mayfair looked like he was 60. I watched the PGA Championship this weekend and he looked 70. I was shocked to hear he is only 40!

It's always embarassing to see sports figures try to act. It's painful to see.

reply

Where did you hear this? I don't see ANY similarities. Mickelson has always been more over-aggressive than cautious.

David Simms' character is modeled after Phil Mickelson, not their golf games. Obviously Simms is a righty and plays more conservative golf, it's the behavior of Mickelson they were mocking.

reply

If anything, they were mocking the play of Gary McCord, who was Costner's instructor for the film and main advisor (and who had a similar blowup at the end of a tournament--carding a 15 when he needed a birdie to win).

Simms was much more like a Chip Beck type (lay up in the Masters....)

Mickelson wasn't known as reckless then, just a really promising young player. He didn't gain the reckless reputation for another 4-5 years.

I always felt like Mickelson secretly had a "Simms-like " personality in private. Though its probably unfair to assume it. Besides I guess now its more likely that Tiger fits that role :)

reply

Doubt it. Before Mickelson started winning majors (back then) his issue was that he NEVER played it safe like the Simms character... he was more like TIn Cup

Where there's smoke, there's barbecue!

The Simms character based on Mickelson rumors are not true, Mickelson was not that conservative nor was he that cocky, arrogant, and a phony. There is no evidence Mickelson was like that off the tour and why would Mickelson agree to appear in a movie that had such a negative possible portrayal of him, why would the director disrespect Mickelson by making the Simms character based on Mickelson but not tell Mickelson who was nice enough to appear in the movie. If that was true Mickelson would be able to file a very serious lawsuit against the director/studio for character assasination, lying, etc.
