Woody Harrelson wanted to play Jake!

In the IMDB trivia, Woody Harrelson wanted to play Jake which ultimately went to Matt Mcconaughey, but John Grisham objected to casting Woody as Jake which makes me wonder why? It sounded like he had a personal beef against Woody! Woody has already had a few hit films in the 90s(InDescent Proposal,White Men Can't Jump) under his name, & he might have been great in the role, did John Grisham had that much power when it came to casting?

Woody would have been a horrible choice

Boston and Philly love to slander us, but they don't have as many fans as us

I think Woody would have done fine in the role. He's proven his acting chops in serious roles.

reply

Probably not handsome enough.

Sounds vain but look at every other lawyer that's the lead from a JG novel.

I think he would have done absolutely fine in the role.

Perhaps he was rejected because he doesn't sweat enough. ;-)
(As evidenced in White Men Can't Jump)

According to tvtropes:
"Woody Harrelson was originally to take the role of Jake, but John Grisham would not allow it as a friend of him was murdered by a Natural Born Killers copycat."
