MOVIE WAS MADE IN 1996 BUT ....

I just saw the movie again & enjoyed it & am amazed at all rhe quality actors in this film. I started to read the posts and am surprised that no one pointed out that it was written about an earlier time in Mississipi not about the 1990s.
You could tell from the way people spoke, acted, cars & clothing. I don't have a copy of the book but I do know it was early in the beginning of the Civil Rights Laws in the USA; probably in the mid to late 1970s. That's why so many places didn't have A/C yet. Cannot judge this movie and the laws with what we now have. It's a period piece of the Old South in Mississippi and shows how they could not accept how the laws had changed and shows what they believed in because that's how they were raised. Hard to believe but we've come a long way.

I always thought it seemed a little behind it's time, but I figured maybe it was because of the time and place that I live in. However, if it does take place in the 70's it almost seems too liberal considering where it's set in.

Has anybody read the book and know for sure?

The movie is set in 1995. They say this in the movie.

yea it's hard to believe that just because the movie was made / came out in 1996 , that that's what the director / producers were basing it on that time period.. if you watch the film carefully you can tell it's based on late 60's to mid 70's

are you going to bark all day little doggie,, or are you going to bite

Is that why they have a CNN truck outside the courtroom? A network that didn't exist until the early eighties? The clothes, cars, etc, were NOT from the seventies. It was set in the mid nineties.

Mathew McConn. says in court "10 years ago in 1985"........ For the love of God the movie takes place in 1995. Of course movies don't automatically take place the year they were made but this movie takes place in 1995. You haven't seen it in a long time if you think it's set the 60's or 70's... There is a 1994 Ole Miss Football schedule poster hanging in MM's office.. the sheriff has a big green 1995 Tahoe.. MM CLEARLY STATES it is 1995 when he says "10 years ago, in 1985" so your reply-post is completely wrong and I'm not trying to be rude or mean but I would like for you to admit to us that you were wrong.

Most definitely. Bass who's clearly well into his fifties, was said to be 23 in 1960.

Seriously if the movie had been set in the mid 70's (which it wasn't) there surely would have been a date credit at the beginning.

Having grown up in the 70's, I think I am pretty safe in saying, this was not meant to depict a 1970's story! The clothing is one of the reasons in my opinion. In the scene where Ellen Roarke enters the restaurant and meets Harry Rex for the first time, that outfit is definitely not circa 1970, but rather the mid 90's. The suits that are being worn by the lawyers, minus Harry Rex, (no offense but he is kind of a rumpled slob!) are not 70's suits.

The beginnings of the Civil Rights laws were the mid to late 60s, not 70s. It would have been nice if they would have set it in the 70s, it would have been a bit more accurate.
