Not getting any punishment

This movie by Shumacher is waaaaaay too RI-DI-CU-LO-US to be belieavable. Nothing makes sense.

I don't wanna judge, but... almost killing an innoscent person (crippling him for life) doesn't seem OK in the least to me.
Does this mean that, if Jackson killed more people in court by accident, it would've been OK too? People who defend his actions seem to view him as Force Majeure at that point. As if he was free to do anything.

Also, what people on this board don't discuss is the fact that Sam Jackson DID NOT know for sure (not 100%) these "boys" were the ones who raped the daughter. It wasn't proved yet.

I have the same qualm. In morality situations where a person is morally justified in revenge the burden of NOT harming innocents is ENTIRELY on them. In fictional stories where the hero (or antihero) is a vigilante they ALWAYS let the villains go if taking them down also harms innocents and the villains often take advantage of this by cowardly hiding behind hostages. A "hero" loses all moral credibility with me when they are ok with harming innocents to get their revenge.

Yes it was an accident and he was found not guilty because the jury rebelled but the could have AT LEAST had him prosecuted for crippling for life that poor security guard. He as the "hero" of this story failed in his responsibility not to harm innocents. Yes it was an accident but not scott free in my book.

And I do NOT think he should have gotten off scott free on the murders either. I hate child rapists as much as the next person and I can feel for him. Heck, I myself might have done the same thing if I had a child and that were to happen BUT we as a SOCIETY absolutely CAN NEVER ABSOLUTELY NEVER decide that it is permissible for an enraged person to kill a defendant in a trial inside the courtroom while they are handcuffed. As soon as we as a society decide that that is permissible if they "really deserve it" others will follow suit. In some cases it will be crimes nowhere near as bad (like brutally killing the man who vandalized your car) or the enraged parent will make a mistake and kill an innocent person. I don't want him getting life I totally agree on a purely moral level that they deserved to die and burn in hell but as soon as our legal system accepts that as a defense we are inviting anarchy.

Some years before this movie was filmed Ellie Nestler shot and killed the man who raped her son in the courtroom in a situation similar to this movie (though she did not also shoot innocent bystanders) and several people I talked to thought she should get an award instead of prison. Such a sad story because she had breast cancer and likely died in prison unable to have a proper relationship with her already damaged son. Even then I AGREED with the court that she had to serve some time and could not get off scott free.

Ellie Kessler was released from prison some time ago. She later said she thought things might have worked out for the best because she could not have afforded the breast cancer treatment on her own.

I meant Nesler. She died in 2008.

I think most people that defend his actions is a parent too.. What's absurd is people like you that have no empathy for the grieving parent, if I was him I wouldn't be that nice and would torture them first before killing them for what they did to my baby.
Besides, child rapists are not humans, no human beings can do such things, those are monsters, demons, and they are a nightmare for a mother like me.

Wow, do you think that poor mother need another punishment (serving time) after what happened to her son? Don't you think her son gonna need all the support he can get after the horrible traumatic event ESPECIALLY from his mother? and why are you comparing killing someone who hurt your little angel with killing a man who vandalized your car? we are parents, not psychos that go on killing people everytime there's a chance to do it.

When you have a child on your own maybe your views will probably change.

It's a novel turned into a movie and acted out beautifully by some amazing actors. It's also a movie. Suspension of certain belief is necessary as well as it also being a period piece to a certain extent. You two are morons.
