Mr Buckley says he's sympathetic..so.....? ?

Buckley is asked by the press if he is sympathetic to Carl Lee Hailey's situation and he says he is. "You're a mother, I'm a father" but he still demands the death penalty unless Carl pleads guilty.

If he was actually sympathetic, he would ask for several years in prison if not life for the defendant because he probably would have done the same thing if someone had sexually assaulted and beaten his child. He didn't say that but being a parent means wanting to avenge your child's suffering.
