He was also my favorite character! I liked how he actually believed Billy without questioning his sanity like everyone else; I hate it when stories are like that.

Same here, Richie was a total badass, he just about stole the film.

King made a big mistake of killing him off in the book but perhaps if he knew Joe Mantegna would play him so well in the movie then he wouldnt have killed him off.
Absolutely. He's possibly my favorite Stephen King character. Ginelli is a charismatic, pragmatic, worldly man, and in a horror story plagued by a Gypsy curse, he was able to uses his wits, resources and tenacity to emerge as the unlikely anti-hero. Ginelli is not a ghostbuster, priest or paranormal investigator; he's a seemingly run of the mill hood. And yet he drops his skepticism as soon as he sees his friend Billy's situation, and commits himself, quite capably presents a very real threat to the evil magician. I just like the idea of a secular man rising to this supernatural occasion without hesitation and with his tenacious gusto, and his attitude "The definition of an a-hole is a guy who doesn't believe what he's seeing."
Re-watched the movie today on AMC; forgot how awesome Joe was here. Such a shame he never played Richie or a role like this much again. Joe in a hero or anti hero role is rare but he did it well here. He's used to villain roles but he does great anti hero's and this is one of his best.
Richie could have easily been a slimey prick of a guy in someone else's hands but Joe made him into a human being with morals in a moral-less field. He could have easily just said eff it when he seen Billy in such god awful shape but no he helped to save his friend with no regrets. He went balls out and drove the gypsies to the breaking points. The best part was he had Billy's back the whole time yet when Billy told him to let the girl live he did. No problems.
Richie is a great example of how to be a friend. Take away his shady job and life he'd be a perfect template.
I agree it's one of King's best characters. Such a shame he killed him off in the book because he'd been a perfect recurring character.
