Someone just out of nowhere said, "He's engaged!" when he never had anything to do with it? In the middle of a performance!? I'd be pissed too. And then Faye gives this stupid speech about all the kisses blah blah blah. Like WTF!?

She's 'sorta' my girlfriend. He never led her on or indicated he was going to marry her. And totally agreed with him... he's like 18 and trying to build a music career (that JUST started).. the last thing he wants is some stupid broad weighing him down. She brought nothing to the table.

I think you're deluding yourself away from the ever-present truth: that we live in a world where women can be, and are, much more than just "stupid broads" who would "weigh him down" and "bring nothing to the table".

And we know that how?

We see almost nothing about Faye and Jimmy. Given what we do get to see about Jimmy's character, it's likely that he has led her on (or at least did nothing to discourage her).

Her speech and her dumping him at the end of the Showcase (she did the dumping) gives me the idea that she was misled about his plans for them.

You're correct, he had every right to be annoyed. But that's just what Mr. White wanted... to show Faye that Jimmy really didn't care about her to commit. Mr. White was giving them the right push to break up so she could end up with Guy. Think about it, all the clues are there:

Mr. White to Faye: "How long have you and Jimmy been you and Jimmy?" When the answer is more than two years, he says "Well that is a long time."

Mr. White to Faye: "What about Guy, is there anyone at home that thinks he's amazing?"

Mr. White brings them together to do Guy's sunglass fittings, as if she was really needed for that.

Mr. White to Guy: "And Faye, well... Faye's special, isn't she."

They never explore further how the message got displayed (as far as know the extended edition doesn't add anything either), but that is quite an interesting theory.

Yes they did. Jimmy asked "Which one if you said we were engaged?" and Mr. White responds with " The same person who said you had class Jimmy." In other words Mr. White was saying that he did it... and really, who else could have? Mr. White was the only one with access to the show's management.

I see that differently. When White said the person who said they were engaged was the "the same person who said you had class Jimmy", he meant that *whoever* it was, was *wrong* on both accounts.

Actually, no. he said "the same person who said you had class Jimmy" as an insult. None of the group, including Mr. White, said he was engaged therefore no one said he had class either.

Yes, he could have been annoyed at whoever it was that made the announcement. But why take it out on Faye? She said she was as surprised as anyone. She didn't do it. So in the end, despite having a right to being annoyed, he didn't have to be discourteous and inconsiderate. He could have handled it differently and should have...unless he was truly a jerk. Which was the whole point of that scene, to truly show what an effing jerk he was. The whole point was to show who he was and to get Faye and Guy together.

Guy was right...."why didn't he leave her in Pittsburg?" He was using her, plain and simple.
