Rewatching this I got the impression Karl was already 'studying' on...


killing Doyle the night he walked into the bedroom with a hammer and asked to be baptized. Though I don't know if he was set on doing it, he was already contemplating it heavily at the very least. Doyle sensed it and was afraid of Karl for the first time.

I agree, though it may have been at an almost subconscious level.

Doyle probably first realized the Karl meant business (and realized how strong he was) when Karl grabbed his arm on the couch to protect Frank.
