Steve Martin the most overrated comic of all time?

I've never found this guy the least bit funny in anything he's done. Ditto for Adam Sandler, and now Will Ferrell. But back to Steve Martin. Phil Silvers must be rolling over in his grave. The overall movie was amusing but not funny. Phil Hartman turned in the best performance of all. Dan Akroyd was servicable as his CO, but it too was just an ordinary performance. It's worth a watch on cable if you're bored, but that's about it.

why would you even bother with similar comics like Sandler & Ferrell? That's your own fault for stupidly going for the same type of comedy you obviously dislike.

whaaat! Steve Martin is absaloutly classic! fair enough he's messed up recently with cheaper by the dozen and the pink panther... but i have a hard time thinking of when i've laughed harder watching planes trains and automobiles!.. fair enough it's because of john candy as much as steve martin..but in that film steve martin was hilarious, the same as he was in sgt bilko with the yelling telling them to get into formation and just not really knowing what he's doing, i think this film was more of a classic comedy style i.e belushi, bill murray, chevy chase style and that wasnt big for the mid 90's.. if i remember correctly.

The Jerk is awsome. As far a recent work, not so much. (especially the Pink Pather films) However, Shop Girl and and It's Complicated were both well suited for him, I thought.

More like one of the best comics of all time. Doesn't get much better than this guy when it comes to pure comedy.

As a comedian he is a legend. Even Chris Rock is a fan. As for comedic actor, if you can't find some genius in at least one of his performances (especially choosing from classics like The Jerk, Parenthood, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Man With 2 Brains, Bowfinger, All Of Me, Planes Trains and Automobiles, The Lonely Guy, Father of the Bride, L.A. Story, Roxanne, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Three Amigos, Little Shop of Horrors, the Oscar nominated short film The Absent Minded Waiter, not to mention his landmark appearances on Saturday Night Live) then I don't know what to say to you. You don't like Sgt. Bilko? Not a classic but entertaining, but you are entitled to your opinion. Declaring someone to be overrated based on your tepid response to one movie? Well that's very shortsighted, and a very poor argument.

Expect that kind of response when you post something like that for all to see and respond to. Especially with such a lame uninformed argument.

Yes, he is extremely overrated and just...not funny.

steve martin is a classic

reply

one of the best comics of his era

reply

nah, it's will ferrell who is the most overrated with ben stiller a close second. chris rock is up there too.

reply

Right Will plays the same character over and over. He overreacts and keeps the same expression through out his films.

reply

No, that award goes to Payly Shore.
