After Billy drops his phone in Sidney's room, the next scene is at the police station where he is pleading his innocence. Eventually he is cleared because Stuart was the one who actually attacked Sidney at her house and Billy knew he would be cleared. Do you think he dropped the phone on purpose to gain Sidney's trust knowing that he would eventually get cleared or what it just an accident and he used it to his advantage?
shareYes. He wanted to be arrested so he would be in jail during the phone call and throw Sidney off.

shareBut that would either entirely eliminate him as a suspect (which was not his intention) or give the audience the idea that he might have an accomplice.
shareBy eliminating him, it would make it easier for him to kill upon his release because he would already have been cleared. But I don't think the audience would assume he would have an accomplice because they whole movie is a series of mis-directions.

Eliminating Billy is the kind of misdirection that would push more people towards the idea of an accomplice, I think.
Besides, there were no plans for another murder (not even Himbry's). Billy and Stu had everything planned for the finale.
