Why Did the Human Garbage Remark Anger Shaker?

Why did the human garbage remark anger Shaker so much? This was before Gibson's character knew Shaker was the kidnapper. Did Shaker think Gibson's should have loved his son's kidnappers? Did he expect some kind of respect or begrudging admiration for the kidnappers? Did he want Gibson's character to respect the rules of engagement? I mean if you kidnap someone's kid, I would think the kidnapper should expect that the kid's parents don't have appreciate and respect it. Did he think Gibson's character should think of it as punishment for bribing the union rep? What was Shaker's problem with Gibson calling his son's kidnappers human garbage? That's what they were.

I think it was the human garbage remark combined with the fact that Tom says he would have been prepared to pay ten times the amount asked, to have his son returned. All this combined with the fact that Shaker had not really been able to get on top of Tom psychologically, was enough to tip him over the edge.

I also believe that actually Shaker thought that "I would have paid 10 times the amount" line was total BS from Mullen. At that point Shaker knew that Mullen would have not paid even 5 bucks to a kidnapper. Besides, Mullen made a harsh comment about Maris and Shaker didn't like that.

Come to think of it, he may not've succeeded in getting the money but he did make Mullen look like a hypocrite with the whole he wont pay one cent to save his only kid line.

I think the "10 times the amount" line drove Shaker batty, and the garbage line got under his skin (he was agitated anyway from the way everything went down), but I don't think Mullen was BSing about the money. He was 100% ready, willing, and able to pay the amount, no questions asked, the first time around. If Shaker had even given Donnie W's character a fake address to give to Mullen when he was handing over the bags, I think Mullen continues to believe the kidnappers are sincere and that paying will get his son back. He refused to pay a dime only after he decided that the kidnappers were going to kill Sean no matter what happened (and he was right about that).

Even though it's just an action / thriller, there is a deep class tension subtext throughout the film.
