as a cop he would not be able to accept a reward

if he did he would have Internal affairs after him investigating him

Pfft...Cops collect rewards all the time. A little coke or cash from the evidence room, a bag or three of drugs doesn't make it from a crime scene to the station, use your imagination. Maybe he couldn't PUBLICLY accept a reward, but he wouldn't have stopped the money from just finding its way into an account set up for him in a different country.

Sounds like you have had dealings with the cops before, whippetchick.

reply

Yes, we have. Horrible, nightmare-inducing dealings. We live in a very small town, where these guys do whatever they want to do. The months after our daughter were unreal. To this day she says that if it happened again, she would not report it. I grew up here, and now we have come back here to retire. But what our whole family has gone through here has made me so bitter and so angry that I would sell our house, which I designed, husband helped build (he's a mechanical engineer), and we chose every tile, room color, plumbing fixture, etc, in a weekend if hubby would agree.
And I know we're not the only ones to go through similar horrors like this.

For $4 million, I might quit my job as a cop, skip the investigation, and retire to an island somewhere. ;)

reply

With $4 mil, you can buy your OWN island! That sounds like a great idea...

I agree, especially since Mullen had already been investigated for bribery, or at least suspected of it.

The media would have been all over this, and then Shaker would have been investigated.

If I were Mullen, I would have a bit suspicious about Shaker's desperation for the reward, given that fact that he couldn't wait to get paid a reward. Cops are meant to serve the community, and turn down extra rewards, as it can lead to bribery allegations (even if not true, a mere accusation can destroy a cop's reputation), so a police officer, sworn to protect and serve, is virtually begging to be paid two million for doing his job. It doesn't matter if Mullen offers a reward, professional protocol means that Shaker has to refuse. The fact that he actually wanted it so bad would have got my radar going long before Shawn pissed his pants.

Serve the community?? Turn down extra rewards?? Sworn to protect and serve? Have you ever had any experience with cops? I have, and the only people they protect and serve are themselves. It would not surprise me one little bit that the cop wanted his money early. After all, he was going to leave the country; he wasn't going to be a cop any more. He never was, if you think about it. How does kidnapping a young boy and holding him for ransom with your scumbag friends go along with "protect and serve"??
And yes, I have had dealings with the cops before. Protecting and serving are the last things on their minds.

When I was a kid...no, wait. I still do that.

I've had dealings with cops. Protecting and serving were the first things on their minds. Completely respectful and professional.

Can't stop the signal.

I'm glad you had a different experience than we did...over and over again. Please tell those cops that Louisiana is reall hurting for good cops; we just don't have any. Hence the bitterness on my part.

If I had a dollar for every time I got distracted...Oh, look!! A puppy!!

Are most of you people in here suggesting that people become cops for reasons other than getting paid money? And that rules about being devoted to being a police officer, whether in US or otherwise, are so incredibly strict and harsh, with regards to it being about serving and protecting, that when an officer decides to collect a reward that someone wilfully offers him, he has to force himself to refuse otherwise, by law, he will be subject to investigation?

Man, NO WONDER THEN, that besides the risks to life, many people in the world DON'T want to be cops.

I bet that soon they weren't even be allowed to collect money they won in a lottery and by law instead be forced to give all of it to charity?

Why is life, in other words, so UNFAIR? Can anyone please speculate, thanks?

reply

I quit wondering about "unfair" when I found out that our cops were (among other things) making jokes in the courthouse halls about our daughter's rapist giving "a bossy bitch what she had coming." This went on for months. And that is why my favorite kind of cop is a dead cop. Preferably tied to the hood of my car. Let 'em make jokes about that.

BTW, I used to have the use rid "whippetchick24" but I changed it because some people thought I meant the inhaling canned air (I think) instead of the breed of dog. We have two Whippets...my babies.

As a criminal with a badge... yes he would. Besides, I doubt he was even planning on staying around.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!
