So the scene where they are on the phone and they take Shawn and put him on the phone and he says "Dad" to kind of prove that he is still alive, why do that? He's speaking in to the phone with the device on it. No matter who talks on it it will sound distorted. Right?

I just saw on the scene where Shaker shoots and everyone thinks he shot Shawn that he flipped a switch or something. I didn't notice if he did that the first time in the earlier scene.

And in addition to that, there's absolutely no interaction between the 'dad' and the 'son'. That message saying 'dad' could have been recorded a long time ago, and the kid could STILL be dead, as far as the 'dad' knows. It proves absolutely NOTHING.
Pretty stupid indeed. The only way it would be proof if they could have talked a bit, so there would have been actual interactivity, which would be impossible to pre-record.
But this movie has SO many stupidities that it's not really an issue.. it's just a stupid movie, so I guess it doesn't matter.

Yes, you're absolutely right. Mullen could have demanded better proof of life. But his leverage to demand anything of the kidnappers at that moment was dubious at best.
