why did they plan on murdering the kid after ransom had been payed

wouldnt it be safer to release the kid after the 2 million had been payed. he couldnt identify anyone due to his eyes being taped and kidnapping is a less severe crime than murder and kidnapping combined.

mankind must put an end to warfare before warfare puts an end to mankind.

The simplest answer I can give is that they were pure evil except Cubby on the grounds that he didn't want to kill the kid, he just wanted the money.

But to me the whole kill the kid part was the weakest part of the plan. What strategic purpose does it serve, you already got what you wanted. Why incur greater wrath upon yourself (Which killing Sean would most certainly do)

Another character I guess I could shine a not too negative light on is Maris (Lili Taylor was excellent in that role) I used to view her to be just as evil as Shaker but after thinking it over further, I now look at Maris as more of a tragic character whose persona was the bi-product of an abusive upbringing.

I think you missed something. Actually Sean was able to recognized Maris and I believe that is the reason she is the one who insisted on killing him.

@ Vocklabruck. It's not surprising that Sean and Maris recognized each other because near the end of the film, Mr. Mullen did comment on the fact that Maris had been to their place a couple of times before.

Either way, I think murdering Sean was entirely Shakers idea and Maris IMO was playing along until her better half, seeing the light or a combination of the two took over.

It's what kidnappers do I think. They get the money, they don't need the kid anymore and he becomes a liability anyway.

The kid was still a potential ear-witness. In the scene near the end of the film where he pissed his pants, the boy recognized Shaker by his voice.

Perhaps kidnapping is a less severe crime than murder and kidnapping combined. But criminals don't always think that way, because they delude themselves that they will never get caught.

For one thing they were cold blooded killers, but also Sean could identify Maris since she was a caterer at his father's business. He recognized her voice. I am sure that the police would try to question Sean about the kidnappers. And Sean would identify Marie. They don't want to leave any loose ends. Not that this justifies their actions but it explains them. Also remember that Sean peed on his pants when he saw Shaker? He recognized his voice. I mean they wouldn't want to leave any witnesses.

But he briefly recognized Maris by the tattoo on her neck, which he had stared at on the night of the party. He said "I know you" and Maris said "No you don't." It was a risk she couldn't take.
