Did that add anything to the story? It was almost as if they were beating us over the head with the fact that her character smoked. Was it ever addressed? Or anyone have thoughts / opinions??
It did seem a bit random and was never addressed clearly. I think it was supposed to signify her being stressed and for some scenes it worked but it used the point she was heavy smoker before the trial etc so was a bit confusing.
I guess it's just one of those random bits they throw in for character and doesn't really need to have a sub-plot so to speak. I do think they should have had other people smoking as well though as it seemed to stand out too much and gave you expectations of some sort of back story coming into it why she is so stressed. Maybe a deleted scene possibly.
Agree 100%. I thought it made the character seem a bit dumb / slow / stupid (or a less harsh word). If one has to be told not to light a cigarette in a building (and a federal building no less), I think it dumbs the character down slightly. When I watched this before (many moons ago now), I didn't notice it. But watching it now, it did seem odd that it was only her that smoked, and as heavily as she did.
Probably just one of those inane quirks they throw into movies to add depth to a character, but end up being pointless and a bit irritating. I watched the HBO show 'The Night Of' recently, and they have John Turturro constantly have problems with his feet, for no real reason at all. Pointless.
In the 90s and before it was common for actors/actresses to casually light up in movies before the big tobacco crackdown snuffed them out of films as "subliminal advertising". As far as LL's character it worked when she needed stress relief but seemed like overkill every other time she tried to light up..
LL's character in her zeal to prove motive said that had she been victimized like Aaron she herself would have killed the Archbisop the same way. What?
That has to be the most incompetent thing I have ever seen in a court scene. Drawing out motive is one thing but giving justification for a murder? And you are the prosecutor? She told the jury the bastard deserved to die!! WTF?
I guess she had reason to be insecure. She was always a step behind what was going on and did her job poorly.
Notice how Vail did not offer her a job working for his firm? He wanted to bang her but not hire her.
