Tim Curry/David Bowie/Mick Jagger

I never knew this before now, but if you read the trivia, you'll find out that both David Bowie and Mick Jagger was concidered for Curry's part.

I mean, what the fish? David Bowie? As much as I like his music and his acting jobs, he could NEVER be a pirate. And grandfather Jagger? Not really. Curry is simply amazing. You get both good acting AND good singingin one handsome package.

I agree. Bowie's a more flashy, alien type of guy, and Jagger's just old. Tim Curry makes a better pirate than Johnny Depp.

I agree that Bowie would have been too much for the role, but I think Mick Jagger would have been funny. I think his personality would have made a great pirate, and believe it or not there really isn't that much of an age difference between Curry and Jagger, Jagger's only three years older and would have been 53 when this movie came out. No doubt Tim Curry was awesome tho.

reply

Agreed. David Bowie did fine as Jareth the Goblin King in "Labyrinth" but that was a dark creepy movie.

"Muppet Treasure Island" called for something less flamboyant, more kid-friendly and colorful. Tim Curry was awesome, you could tell he enjoyed having this role being on camera. I still have to remind people that he pwned the role of a pirate long before Johnny Depp even thought about doing Jack Sparrow. Speaking of, wouldn't that have been freakin' awesome to see Long John Silver in "Pirates of the Carribean"? Oh well...

reply

Ha yes. my 3 brilliant men though. Tim is my pick still. Mick would of come in at 2nd.

reply

I think Tim Curry was probably a better pirate, but David Bowie would have added a cool kind of spin to the part if he did a similar character to Jareth in Labyrinth. He seems more foreboding in a way.

reply

Mick Jagger? Eww...

And I love Bowie, and I think it would have been hilarious had he palyed Long John... but it wouldn't be the same movie. Tim Curry did an amazing job, and was perfect for it.

nah i disagree with that. i love johnny depp's jack sparrow. and its quite unfair to say curry makes a better pirate..seeing as though the storylines and nature of the character are so dramatically different....long john is a treacherous villain, whereas jack sparrow isn't that much of a villain...really...

Tim Curry: The Talent
David Bowie: The Looks
Mick Jagger: The Moves

(of course I am not say that they all don't possess all three .. but Imagine them combined? Tidami Curboja.)

Well, how many actors have the bragging rights to say, "I've stolen a job from David Bowie and Mick Jagger."
Tim Curry's really something.

david bowie also turned down the role of Captian Hook in Hook.

I honestly am quite curious to see him portray a pirate.

I love Jesus Christ and am 100% proud!

reply

Oh that's just awesome...

I still think that Curry is the best (I mean, I grew up on this movie and still find myself quoting it..a lot), but I get an excited chill thinking about Mick (one of my favorite singers) as a pirate. And Long John Silver, no less.

That kinda made my day!

"The twentieth century! The world has gotten very, very old."

Since the three are approximately the same age...Mick Jagger definitely could if this was made in the 1970s.

I don't think Bowie could do it. I think he doesn't have that tongue in cheek wit that the role requries.

Keith Richards lol jk

Those of you saying Bowie could never play a pirate or desperately wanting to see him as a pirate; he has a cameo in the 1983 pirate comedy Yellowbeard. OK, he's not actually playing a pirate but it's close, he's a sailer involved in a bit of deception.
