Billy Bones' cursing edited out

I seem to remember Billy Connolly reacting to Mrs Bluberidge's uncanny hearing with "how does she bloody do that!". But in the DVD i recently purchased he says "how does she bloomin do that" and his lips and tone of vioce seem out of synch when he says it...does anyone out there know anything?

My DVD's got "bloody" eh. Don't know what's up.

There's a new world order coming, Shadow, and I'm going to be a king! A KING!

reply

I've got a VHS (bleh) and it says "bloody" as well.

reply

Yeah, that's weird. My VHS says "bloody."

I don't regret this, but I both rue and lament it.

When I saw it in the cinema nearly ten years ago, I remember that Long John Silver said "Where's the bloody treasure?" to Miss Piggy when they are on top of the cliff. (I know he said that, because as a nine year old I was rather shoecked by the word and I had a discussion with my mum and grandmother about swearing on the way home in the car. Anyway...) But in the DVD, which we purchased about two years ago, he says "blasted treasure". How strange.

Of course they've brought forth juniper berries, they're juniper bushes!

reply

Are you in Britain? I'd be really surprised if it were edited out of an American version, because "bloody" isn't really a curse word here.

I don't regret this, but I both rue and lament it.

<<50th Anniversay DVD Edition: It says 'Bloomin'. >>

You posted this on Friday, November 25th. The 50th Anniversary DVD has a street date of TUESDAY, November 29th. ERGO, you either work in a video store, or you are actually in the industry. (Or else you found a store where they broke the street date and put out product early and that's a real no-no.)

50th Anniversay DVD Edition: It says 'Bloomin'.

I hate it when they go back and change things!

He's Australian. In another thread, someone pointed out that the 50th Anniversary release date in Australia was November 9th. Might clear things up a bit. In other countries the release date varied. *shrug*

reply

I just checked my 50th anniversary edition DVD purchased in Canada... and he still says "bloody".

Video: How does she bloody do that?
DVD: How does she bloody do that?
50th Anniversary Edition???: How does she bloody do that?
Are they all right?

reply

Region 1 50th Anniversary has BLOODY! Ha!

There's a new world order coming, Shadow, and I'm going to be a king! A KING!

reply

My old VHS has Bloomin', its the UK version if that has any significance...

reply

My UK one is edited, and its OLLLD...it always bothered me, just because I can't imagine Bill Connelly toning down such a mild swear word, "bloomin'" looks wrong coming from him.

"But then again, too few to mention."

reply

Region 1 50th Anniversary has BLOODY! Ha!

But I am Canadian, not British. Nice try, MacTavish-2.

reply

Bloody.

I'm American. Tada.

I have the old DVD, not the new version that came out in November. What does that have?

On my VHS, it doesn't say bloody, or bloomin or anything. It just says "How does she do that?"

reply

Welll when Jim, Rizzo, and Gonzo say it, they say, "How does she do that?"
But when Billy Bones says it, he says, "How does she bloody do that?"
(Or bloomin', depending on where you live.)
Yeah, bloody is definitely not considered an offending word in America at all.

I'm English and my DVD says 'blooming'.

reply

In the DVD version I bought they use the word "bloomin". But for some reason the subtitles still show it as "bloody." Go figure.

reply

When I first saw this movie I borrowed it on VHS from the local library. Back then Billy Bones used the word "bloody". When I bought this movie on DVD this christmas they've changed it to "bloomin".

As much as I hate political correctness, I can't say it bothers me all that much. It doesn't affect the storyline anyways.

It says bloody on my VHS. That's where I first heard the word bloody. I like saying it. :D

reply

Didn;t they say hell in the film? I mean this movie wasn't really violent but I didn't know they were allowed to say that in a G-rated movie.

reply

My DvD says bloomin, but my sister in laws video says bloody

reply

Is your DVD american or british?

reply

British

reply

Wow that is weird since "Bloody" is more of a curse word in england than in america.

reply

[deleted]

I know but apparently in England when they use "Bloody" in that context,it is either the equivalent or nearly equal to saying the F-word.

reply

[deleted]

I recorded my version off TV a few years ago, and it has "How does she bloomin' do that?" and "Where's the blasted treasure?"

It's bad enough they'd edit it out for television broadcasting. But I paid for my *beep* DVD, if I paid for it I know what im getting myself into and im pretty sure I can *beep* handle the "terror" that is the *beep* word 'bloody'.

reply

The British censors passed the film uncut but had lots of complaints from parents about the language in a "U" certificate so it was removed from all later versions. Strangely, I read somewhere that the offending word was "bugger". Bloody is a mild swearword like "damn". It annoys me that all these parents complained about the language but are the first to use it in front of their children. Hypocrites!
