NIck Nolte based his character on....
I read in an interview with NIck Nolte that he based his character on James Ellroy's Dave Klein from White Jazz which he was reading at that time for research into that period of L A history. This could of been a great film if the story was by Ellroy but was a pale imitation of his work or film noir in general.
