What year was this supposed to be?

I only saw this movie once on VHS, a while back. I liked it overall, although the plot seemed to go off in different directions, and everyone seemed to be overdressed. Can any one tell me exactly what year this is supposed to be? I guess there are various clues, especially the year of the car the detectives are driving. I'll probably take another look at this movie on DVD, but thought I would ask anyway.

Regards,

Steve

I also heard it was 1953. By the way.. I was raised in Hollywood during the mid-1950s, and the characters are NOT overdressed. Believe it or not, we dressed up anytime we were out in public. You never saw a woman without makeup and men typically wore a suit or shirt and slacks, NEVER Levis as they do today. There were shoe shine stands every couple of blocks and most men wore hats outdoors. That did not change until after around 1958 or 59, as I recall. The film was very accurate as far as costumes were concerned. I recall that my mom took me Los Angeles to Mexico City in 1957 and every man on the plane had a suit on and their hats were on racks above the seats and we were flying coach, not first class.
