The Good, the Bad and the Not So Ugly

Barbara Streisand, despite not being traditionally beautiful played numerous roles as the leading lady desired by lots of very handsome men and it was very believable. She had that sassy, quirky quality that was very charming, in a Carrie Bradshaw kind of way (I always thought the two where very similar). Although she didn't look like a model, she looked very pretty.

So in the movie "the mirror has two faces" fast forward 30 or so years and here we have Babs playing the frumpy middle aged homely spinster who is courted by a handsome professor who only wants to marry her because he finds that sex, passion, and physical attraction inevitably ruin things, so if he found a woman he liked personally, but wasn't attracted to it would work.

I didn't love this movie, but it was entertaining and an original story. I loved Lauren Bacall as the overbearing mother. She was the best part of the movie. Her character while cold, and a bit mean was very honest and believable. The other two; streisand and bridges I found to be sort of goofy, unbelievable characters. Bridges, a very handsome professor can't find the right woman? I'm sorry. That just makes no sense at all. Streisand, as Rose was sweet and charming, but too old I thought to play this part of a middle aged insecure frump. She made a joke about how things will "droop", hello, she's already in her 50's when she plays this part. No offense, but things have already drooped. I thought it would have been much more believable if Rose's character was in her thirties.

I don't think it was the professor's "looks" that kept him from finding someone....there were plenty of girls willing to be with him - his issue was finding someone that wanted more than just his looks.....which is why he got obsessed with that aspect of atttraction. Not only that, but as he demonstrated so many times, he was uncomfortable around beautiful women and in this way he felt 'manipulated'.....again, he was trying to get away from that.

just my thoughts.....

Interesting point. Ironic too, as imo that seems to be what beautiful women or people with money go through, wondering if the people who are with them have genuine motives.

Being a desperate homely middle-aged professor cannot be played by a woman in her thirties,it just doesn't make sense.

Ummm....Rose's character IS in her thirties, at least. The ad said you had to be over 35.
