Size 8 to size 6 (10 years of misguidedness)

For the last ten years, I thought she went from a size 12 to a size 8 in this movie. I remember asking my mom what the big deal was (which it is a big deal--no pun intended)...come to find out she loses one dress size! I've spent 10 years thinking about her on that exercycle wearing those baggy clothes and losing weight. I was so misguided! Not to mention that I didn't think being a size 12 was that big...this movie has really schooled me.

the truth is we don't really know what her original dress size was....I would say a 12 is close.....the scene where she is in the dressing room is after she has lost weight and I think it is pointing out to her mother that she hasn't lost down to a size 8 she has lost down to a size 6 - much more than her mother thought or maybe wants to think....so i think your original thought was right.

i think the main idea of the transformation was not being accurate about dress sizes, but showing that she was starting to care for herself and that when one has a goal in life they can reach it.

She was supposed to be a 12 or 14 in the beginning. It wasn't that she just lost one dress size.
The scene with her mother saying 8 and she saying no a 6, was put in to
a) show the pride she is taking in her transformation
b) show that her mother is DELIBERATELY underestimating her... and doing it vocally on purpose.
c) and to show the backbone that Streisands character is beginning to grow. She is starting to let her mother's comments slide off her like water on a duck's back.

She was NOT supposed to be a size 12 or 14. That's much bigger. The point was that she slimmed down and toned up.
