An interesting point...

If this film had been made recently, many people would have rejected it, saying that is was paedophilic, i.e. the way Miss Honey takes Matilda home. I think it's interesting how people's views have changed.

In Britain nowadays, you aren't even allowed to video a primary school nativity play, because the government think that paedophiles might publish it on the internet. The fact that the children are fully clothed with teatowels on their heads doesn't seem to come into it.

a very good point!!!

umm ms honey addpted matilda didn't she? thats allowed

reply

Yes, but at first she just took her home. In today's society that wouldn't be considered acceptable. What would happen if a teacher invited a child home? It would be considered a scandal, and a lawsuit would probable ensue.

mistress! what would i get out of that except a passel of brats?!

Matilda's parents didn't care about her anyway, so if this were a scenario in the real world--exactly like it was in the film--no lawsuit would ensue because the parents wouldn't have cared enough to have known.

I think it would be more of a problem if the teacher were male, or if the student were male. It was an adult female, and a youth female. Adult's males are primarily pedophiles.

Either way, I wouldn't put it past the public to make such a huge deal over it. The world is becoming way to claustrophobic. The media is mainstreaming problems and making this worse. It should have gone the way where it brings problems to light, but in fact it capitalizes and sensationalizes all the terrible things that go on.

Exactly. And with the Wormwoods, they would probably just say that Miss Honey was doing them a favor. I'm almost willing to believe they wouldn't even claim her because they basically didn't even notice she really alive until she turned 6. This is of course assuming the family is exactly the way they were in the movie.

I think you mean 'paedophiles are primarily adult males'.

If matilda came out in our days, it'd be hip hop themed and maltilda would be listening to Gangsta rap, and smoking cigarretes.

I'm glad this was made in the 90's, films are butchered enough as it is.

reply

Indeed...we need more good movies like this...that's what I say, make them more like the good ones, and to hell with what people say. If they want to riot something they will no matter what, might as well give them something GOOD.

reply

Yep. We weren't even allowed to get a professional video man to video our school play (and this is a senior school). That may have had something to do with the fact that there were 12 year old dressed up as hookers... Our Englsih teacher (who was directing) decided to cast Year 7s as the hookers in Little Shop of Horrors.

I hope so! I've known a lot of adult males in my life, but not one has been a paedophile! LOL

reply

There are hookers in LSoH?! Ive seen the film multiple times and have read alot about the play and how much darker and unhappy it is in regards to the ending but Ive never heard there were hookers. Are you talking about the 3 girls who sing throughout the movie? (Ronnette Chiffon and Chantell I think their names were) I thought they were just like the Transilvanian chorus in RHPS. Not really characters but more there to explain the plot etc. That's really interesting.

reply

No, our teacher decided to make the chorus all seriously underage hookers. It mentions briefly that Audrey used to be a hooker - it's basically all her old friends. All were under the age of 16. Most were younger than 14.

I'm anaspeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericumbobulations...

reply

Wow. I don't know if thats awesome or creepy. I should go see the show live someday, its on the list, right after Evil Deads musical, Rent and Rocky Horror.

reply

I thought of that. Only I was thinking if Ms Honeycutt was Mr. Honeycutt they would have never let him get away with half of the things Embeth Davidtz's character did. Shame.

Rest in Peace Gary Coleman :(

I actually know a real-life Matilda. She was adopted by her second grade teacher. Even looks a lot like her, lol. I don't know the circumstance with her parents, but obviously at least back then it wasn't a huge to-do, haha. But I definitely see where you're going.

reply

Aw, that's sweet. Cool story. Well you know times have changed.

But if it she was to be arrested (let's say) what the hell would happen to that buffalo Principal. I mean, if they are going to arrest a lady for taking a child to her home, wouldn't they incarcerate a crazy lady for throwing kids out windows, almost impaling one on the fence, torturing them psychologically ?
