The CGI

I think (I'm almost sure) that Industrial Light and Magic did the CGI for this movie. I just saw this movie today and I was like "Damn those CGI sucks real bad" but it was the same company who did the CGI for Jurassic Park (1994) and I still belive that the dinossaurs from JP were amazingly well done (they work until these days)

Smaller budget. Plus, it all depends on the director. Burton's movies have never seemed to have CGI that was impressive looking. Burton is no Spielberg. With that said, Mars Attacks doesn't need cutting edge effects. It's a silly B-movie parody and wasn't trying to be ID4.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

I believe they did that on purpose, because the movie is ultimately a satire on 1950s alien B-movies.

THERE WAS MONEY IN THE BANANA STAND!!!!!!

It's CG, yet, the UFOs spins a bit off perfect-center, wobbling like hand made models. That's very telling.

I may have never laughed so hard at anything I've ever read on IMDB.

Thank you.

"ENGLISH, MOTHER**** ER, DO YOU SPEAK IT?!?"

what?? O_o

reply

Yes, I think it was meant to be.

Mind you they didn't have CGI in the fifties...

It's not "sci-fi", it's SF!

The movie was intended to have a 1950's alien invasion feel, I'm fairly certain all the cheezy CGI was fully intentional.

reply

some yes like the ships etc BUT not all the aliens while in design looked cheesy as meant to be BUT the actual cgi was to look real and blend in with live action but now it looks horrid

same with brosnans severed head and parkers head on a dogs body lol

The movie is almost 2 decades old... of course it looks dated now. So do Independence Day and Twister! It was good CGI back then, and the Martians were suppose to look like they were stop motion

ID4 had more compositing and miniature use than actual CGI.

If you were distracted by the (purposely) bad CGI it's safe to say the movie is not for you. It's for those of us who can relish in a good 'bad' movie.

reply

Absolutely - I think that it's a great film. Wonderful, black humour - not many films incinerate labradors and crush boy scouts with monuments!

I can easily imagine Tim Burton looking at ILM's first attempts at their CG for this movie, and him saying "Um, wow, this stuff is great, you guys. In fact... it's, uh... it's a little TOO good. Could you make it maybe like at least 30% crappier?"

reply

The CGI is intended to look dated. It was perfect

First off, there isn't nearly as much CGI in 'Jurassic Park' as people think there is. Most of the dinosaur shots were animatronic puppets and guys in rubber suits. Secondly, the CGI in 'Mars Attacks' was really good for it's time. It hasn't aged well and that's the big problem with CGI. Back then, it was ground breaking. Today, it kinda sucks.
