I'll Give It A Solid Seven
Has it been twenty years since this wonderful comedy came out? Shucks! What some do not feel entertainingly redeeming about this film is lost upon me. In watching it again two decades hence I took in the past for granted that this movie was filled to the gills with an all star cast. From Annette Bening to Danny DeVito to Natalie Portman to Michael J. Fox to Pam Grier ... heck, even Tom Jones! LoL! The comedy is hilarious to a fault, but the plot is simple.
The most memorable and funny scenes, at the very least for me, was the initial contact with the aliens in the Mojave; Press Secretary Jerry Ross inviting a guest into JFK's secret room, and last but not least the scenes leading up to the Martian attack of the Landmark casino in Vegas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT4iPWzsf94 - not to mention Randy's Donuts' donut rolling down Manchester Ave.
And although the clichés, and campy scenes come a dime-a-dozen the key in enjoying (or even appreciating) this movie is not to take it seriously. But seriously, the hook or the underlying question is: Are we alone? And if E.T. were as combative as these were, I think the trick wouldn't be Slim Whitman's ♪Indian Love Call♪, but perhaps Justin Bieber's ♪Sorry♪ ?
I'm not sorry and unashamed of having experienced and enjoyed this one, as I think Burton had a blast doin' it.
