You're only right, Tresix. Still I like this movie as it is. I threw it on just the other night.
Many years ago I read a review for the Batman TV series (1966) and the writer stated that he, and many fans of the comic book exploits were disappointed, in the production's campy take but watched it anyway because it was closest to what they wanted to see. Well, I suppose I feel the same way about Tim Burton's little opus.
When I was a youngster I had some of those cards and really enjoyed looking at them and thinking what a terrific movie they would make. The Horror! The Gore! The Adventure! Those Martians were a fantastic design!
So, when I heard about this I looked forward to its release. Yes, I was disappointed but once I got over that initial let down, I came to enjoy it as it was. Some beautiful imagery there. I especially like the giant Robot chasing the Lukas Haas character. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RFYZK6WOexw/Tr1csQAjGdI/AAAAAAAAILY/m-fVuR6m kwY/s1600/robot32.jpg

There were a few other wonderful scenes. It is what it is. Maybe someday someone will return to the source cards and render a faithful adaptation.
