Johnny Carson: Very Over-rated

Carson had no real talent. He couldn't sing or tell funny jokes. He was also overpaid for the work he did.

And who the hell cares what you think of Johnny Carson?

reply

Thank you, Mr. Showtime...I wouldn't have even repsonded to that troll.

reply

I'm only 22 and find Carnac hilarious.

reply

WHAT?!? HOW DARE YOU!!!! JOHNNY WAS AWESOME! HE HAD SO MUCH TALENT!

Johnny Carson 1925-2005. We will never forget you.

reply

Johnny Carson sucked. The fact that he had his show for 30 years. Very depressing.

Starting this Fall, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson will be only second to Saturday Night Live. Which is going on its 31st season.

jimdog is right. Carson was the perfect person for the time. Dignified, humble and funny. Letterman and Leno do a good job, but there was only one Johnny Carson.

reply

there is only one Johnny carson....and nobody f-ing cares!

Leno and Letterman are way funnier, either of them top Carson, they just are better hosts/comedians

reply

You sure seem to have a lot invested in your opinion.

Try this, both Leno and Letterman respected Carson and wanted to do as good a job as he did.

Considering how many talk shows, both network and syndicated, tried and failed to topple Johnny Carson over the years, it just goes to show how good Carson was and how (deceptively) easy he made it look.

Couldn't tell a joke? You can't buy delivery and timing that Johnny had! And even nights where his monologue was dying, he always managed to pull a self-deprecating gag out and save the night. Now that's talent!

That said, I think he stayed too long. If Arsenio Hall accomplished anything with his late-night show, it showed how stodgy the Tonight Show had become. NBC's problem was that they really didn't challenge Johnny to do better; they kept deferring to him when they should have kicked his rear a little.

After all is said and done, though, there was only one Johnny. And he's gone.
