What the heck kind of art was she making?

I was trying to figure out the art (boxes!?!)

No wonder she wasn't selling any.

Actually the boxes were from the imagination of George Dawes Green, the author of the book the screenplay was based upon. The idea was not from the film makers.
I have read the book and would recommend it. The movie did not miss much, and while there were some changes, and a sub plot that was left out ( that would have dragged the movie down in my humble opinion) the screenplay was a fairly faithful adaptation of the book.

I may not agree with your opinion, but I will defend to the death your right to disagree!
