Anything other than videogames that are\were as popular as Turboman?

In the last decade, the only crazy popular items that ran out quick were the Wii console (2006-2008), the Xbox 360 when it was released in 2005, and apparently the Amiibos (Nintendo figurines that can be used in gameplay) are pretty popular.

Maybe because I haven't really paid attention, but I just cannot think of any type of toy or gift that quickly runs out the way Turboman did.

This was made in the 90s and back in the 90s, certain toys were the "must haves" like cabbage patch kids, furbies, tickle me elmo, and power rangers figures.

reply

Oh, and I forgot (how could I forget) Razor scooters!

I don't remember Cabbage Patch kids being popular toy to get for kids in the mid to late 1990s. I know Elmo and Furbies were back then

reply

I believe cabbage patch dolls were an 80s fad, not really 90s

Cabbage Patch kids were HUGE in the 80's. My aunt told me that they were selling really quick so they did a raffle type thing where if your name got drawn, you got a cabbage Patch kid and her daughter's name was called. She even got the same hair and eye color that she hoped for!

reply

I was an idiot to sell my power rangers figures. Heck all. My toys growing up. Toys in the 90s are much more valuable now

reply

I wish, but not all toys from the 1990s are worth money for example Star Wars, Star Trek, and Marvel. I don't even see these figures at the flea markets anymore going for crazy amount of money. Now it the recent stuff from the 2000s going for a lot of money.

Minion, Frozen, finding Dory, Pokemon , Tangled themed toys are the things I can think of that would be as popular as Turnoman dolls.

Back in the 90s, I remember beanie babies, Pokemon cards, furbies, Polly pockets and babies being really big.

In the 80s, I imagine Cabbage Patch dolls, Care Bears, my little pony, and strawberry shortcake being a hit

Yes, I remember the original Transformer toys in the late 80's, the Optimus Prime toy was unavailable across Europe from as a early as October.

Some sort of production mix up caused the shortage given that the toy was in made in Japan.

The Cabbage Patch Kids doll craze of 1983 actually was the inspiration for Jingle All The Way and like Turboman was popular in the movie toy crazes still exist today. Like you can remember in 1996 when Tickle Me Elmo debuted toy stores couldn't keep them on shelves and every chain store from Toys "R" Us to Target completely sold out of Tickle Me Elmos because they were the sought after hot holiday toy and the same thing happened with Furby when they became the hot holiday toy of 1998 and there's something about electronic toys that attracts kids for Christmas and now you can bet the hot toy craze now will be The Mandalorian toys of The Child and they have become popular like Turboman was. But when I have watched Jingle All The Way I have never figured out why Jamie had such a temper and an attitude when Howard called and Jamie yelled at him and accused him of not keeping his promise to get his beloved Turboman when the store was sold out and Howard should've gotten him a different action figure until Turboman was back in stock so Jamie could buy him later after Christmas. Howard needed to spend more time with Jamie so he could show what a great father he was instead of letting him down and making him sad

This was definitely a rift on the Power Rangers craze mixed in with people stomping all over each to grab that last "Cabbage Patch" kids doll on the shelf a decade earlier.

Outside of video game systems, the toy that sticks out to me in recent years were LOL Dolls and accessories. My daughters were obsessed with those dolls, and you couldn’t casually find them anywhere during the holiday season 3 or 4 years ago.

Had to overpay a 100% markup on eBay to get them. Actually, a service like eBay would have turned this movie into a 3-minute YouTube video. After the first attempt to unsuccessfully find the toy at a retail store, I would have simply looked it up on eBay; justifying that the time and gas spent will even out with the markup price 😆
