The bias is so ingrained about the crazy alien abduction stories that they continue to see him as crazy despite the overwhelming evidence directly in front of them.
It's almost a programmed response in their psyches.
tbh I was thinking it was rather the scriptwriters thought it would be funny (which it sort of was if you didn't realise they were being attacked by aliens -- which they weren't because the script writers were sitting around a desk in a room in a building in tinseltown somewhere that wasn't being attacked by aliens), rather than the script writers realising that under the circumstances, being kidnapped by aliens wasn't such a far out idea.
