Confused about this movie

In previous movies they make a big deal out of the fact that the cenobites need someone to work the box in order to create a bridge for them to cross over from their realm, or whatever. Yet in this movie pinhead seems to be able to appear and move around at will, terrorizing the 1990s era architect and his family, killing random security guards, etc. - even though no one worked the box. So what the hell? Can the cenobites just appear when and where they want, regardless of whether or not someone works the box?

Also, what exactly was the deal with the building-sized box that pinhead wanted the architect dude to finish building? Pinhead went through all the trouble of grabbing the architect's family to force him to finish it, but then he just sort of kills the guy. Again, what the heck? Did Pinhead just change his mind or something?

Your first question: yes, usually but the studios wanted more Pinhead at this stage. Thus the writers came with twists, and had him stay once summoned. An in-cnaon explanation could be that the Toymaker's lines involvement meant Pinehad was allowed to stay on Earth in order to deal with him.

Your second question is part of the studio butchery. Dimension ripped the film to shreds and edited it. Go to my youtube post here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMDRF-P_Rjw and you'll see the original workprint cut. Originally the building was TWO things, a giant Lamaent COnfiguration BUT Angelique realised it was also a Elysian Configuration prototype. She wanted John dead so he couldn't use the Elysian to detsroy them. Pinehad wnats to sue him to finish the Lament aspect and Angelique doesn't tell him about the Elysian. In the finale, Angelique does not say "open the gateway for me" but she tells John NOT to do what Pinhead says... instead she tells him to active the Elysian when Pinhead is in place. She tries to kill Pinhea,d the lights start and they start to kill Pinhead wh shoots chains to the ceiling and escapes. At this stage he summons chains that wrap around Angelique and pull her into the light, almost killing her. But as John saids, he's not finished yet, and it breaks down.

Pinhead flies down off his chains and then says "You're as dangerous as she said you are... no more games!" And THEN kills John. Which makes much more sense, having almost been killed by the Elysian, rather than randomly changing his mind in the final cut.
