I love it for its ambition and imagination

I’m certainly in the extreme minority of people who can appreciate the ambition behind Bloodline. Though the film got hacked up and reduced the plot to a mess (as only Dimension and Joe Chappelle could do it!), the multiple storylines stretched over three time periods makes for an interesting take on the Hellraiser mythos. It also features some slick gore and makeup gags, which comes as no surprise considering Kevin Yagher was at the helm (before he was unceremoniously dumped in post-production); I suppose the problem comes when all of the explicit gore overtakes the film. Just as part three missed the mark in terms of capturing the themes of the series, so too does part four--but at least it’s trying to tell an epic story while doing so, which gives it the nod. he thing I loved about this movie is it went in between different periods of time and gave you a better understanding of what's going on with the mystic boxes but from the viewpoint of the central characters ancestors. It's a great idea and worked really well in the film and also had a wonderful ending that allowed everything to be over with but with the timeline allowing for further movies to be made without any problems.

Have you watched the fan-remastered director's cut that's floating around on Youtube, that combines footage from the theatrical cut and the workprints to follow Yagher's shooting script?

I totally agree with you on all the film's strong points, and that unofficial director's cut really brings them out and makes the movie much stronger! I'd call it narratively the best sequel, even if it still can't quite top the visual amazingness of part 2 for me.

I wrote an article about this version, and how it should inspire viewers to reassess the overall quality of Bloodline as a film - take a look if you're interested!

I'd love to see this movie get the sort of overhaul and brand-new edit that Scream Factory gave Nightbreed, but I doubt it will happen...

Yeah totally a cool concept. Very "Interview With A Vampire" esque. The timeless quality of our search for whatever the cenobites have to offer and their timeless drive to give it to us. Totally slogged down in the weird apartment/office high rise segment. And just generally poorly constructed set pieces designed around poorly constructed sets. Very nice image though: when they rip the flesh off the poor peasant/prostitute woman to create angelique. The thin pateen of the human form!
