WOOOW!! WHat a category Best Leading Actress was!! AMAZING roles that year, and I saw them all that very same year!!

I mean, check this out:

Mara Wilson - "Matilda" (........unforgettable)
Michelle Trachtenberg - "Harriet the spy" (cool... so cool)
Anna Paquin - "Fly away home" (little HUUUGE movie)
Heather Matarazzo - "Welcome to the doll house" (!!!!)
Thora Birch - "Alaska" (ok, regular for her but also outstanding that year)

michelle won but it was a REALLY close race, I've never seen such an amazing five actors group in this awards; usually, there are great kids AND some crappy performance in "Zathura", "Sleepover", or something awful like that. But that year was full of good movies with even better performances!

I'd have voted for Mara maybe. I don't know, it was really a hard choice I think

ok, maybe 1996 was also a hard choice:

Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain (1995) - Anna Chlumsky
Casper (1995) - Christina Ricci
Clueless (1995) - Alicia Silverstone
Grizzly Mountain (1997) - Nicole Lund
Home for the Holidays (1995) - Claire Danes
Jumanji (1995) - Kirsten Dunst
Little Princess, A (1995) - Vanessa Lee Chester
Little Princess, A (1995) - Liesel Matthews

but it's not a flawless category (who the hell saw "Grizzly Mountain"??) but that year was also good with the boys ("The amazing Panda adventure", Jesse Bradford as a kid with his "yellow dog", Brad Renfro and Joseph Mazzello for "The cure", great performances!)

anyway, I realize it's not 1997 or 1996... IT'S THE 90s!!!!!!
SOOOO MANY coooool kids/teens movies were filmed in the 90s ("The Witches", "Matilda", "A little princess", "Jumanji", "Casper", "Harriet the spy", "House arrest", "Bogus", "Small soldiers", "Parent trap", "My girl" and stuff like that. Cult classics from the 90s. The only year of this decade that is worth the bet is 2001 with "the little vampire", "snow day" and "the kid")
nowadays, a kiddie movie is "Zathura" (ok, I know, I hate it) or poop like that

I LOVE THE 90s!! (......yep, I'm 17)
